India’s first XR Experience Space setup in Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

XR Experience Space for showcasing Atmanirbhar “Made in India” XR Technologies to Startups and Industries is inaugurated by Dr.Chintan Vaishnav of Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog.


CHENNAI, 12 January 2023: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has setup an exclusive XR Experience Center in the IIT Madras Research Park showcasing AtmaNirbhar “Made in India” XR technologies from its industrial consortium members. As a part of Experiential Technologies Innovation Center (XTIC), CAVE (Consoritum for Augmented and Virtual reality Engineering) has about 270 startups and Industries developing (AR / VR / MR) technologies. The Experience center will be a platform to showcase the technologies from CAVE members to the visitors to the IIT Madras Research Park.

It is inaugurated by Dr.Chintan Vaishnav, Mission Director, Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog, along with Padmashri Prof.Ashok Jhunjhunwala, President IITM-ResPark; Dr.Gururaj Deshpande, Chairman, Sparta Group; Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chairman, Axilor Ventures; Dr.Venkat-Sadanand Neurosurgeon, Loma Linda University.

This Experience Cente is an initiative of XTIC is India’s first Research and Product Innovation centre for XR and haptics Technology, a transdisciplinary centre encompassing several fields of engineering, medicine, psychology and arts. As XR is highly interdisciplinary, innovations in this field need confluence of minds from different fields.
While most of the research labs around the world are focusing on either software or hardware components of XR, the centre in IIT Madras is focusing on the fundamentals of XR – human factors, particularly perception and illusion, pioneering a new field Perceptual Engineering, and Perceptual Algebra.
